Hey y'all, do you have any advice about how I might go about becoming a qualified member of an SAR team? How do I join an SAR team? Currently, I am a premed student in Texas about to take a gap year after graduating in 2021. During that gap year, I would ideally like to work as a front country EMT in Montana and volunteer doing back country SAR.

How feasible is this? What courses would make the transition easier and safer? How do I make sure that I am a helpful member, if I do end up on a team?

Thank y'all for your help. I am trying to get this sorted early so that I can take any necessary courses or certification programs this summer.

I don't know how it works everywhere but where I am, the county Sherriff is the place to start. Our Sherriff has periodic informational meetings about joining SAR where you can learn all the requirements etc. but you can also go and find that out at the office anytime. You might start there in your area or do what I do when I start looking for info.......Google it.

Additionally, any training or experience not just in general camping, but in SAR specific items will help. Although, this may be a challenge in the current environment. Things such as land navigation, communications (to include possible HAM licensing), high-angle rope techniques, medical skills (EMT, Wilderness EMT) and the like are force multipliers in terms of making you useful. Much depends on the local jurisdiction, as snakey mentioned above, but any of those skills will help. Not to mention them being worthwhile to have as a functioning human being...
