I’m taking a trip and it’s going to be cold. I’m just car camping, but flying with my gear. Light is best but I’ll probably buy a few extras when I arrive. I’ve never used a tent heater, are they safe? I have a mummy bag, are liners helpful or can I just wear extra clothes? I have some warm, good quality base layers. I’m going to try hand warmers. Any suggestions?

"Cold"?  How cold?  What is your bag rated for?  Planning on supplemental heat is a bad idea, IMO.  Even those who use tipis with woodstoves take a bag rated for the expected conditions.    The best "backup" I've found is a down vest with omni tape sewn to the collar.  To that I attatch a Jacks R' Better down hood.  Hood weighs two ounces and packs about the size of an orange.  I have a similar set up in synthetic.  My wife made the hood from a Ray Jardine plan.

While a wood stove is nice, it's impractical if you're flying. I can't imagine that the condensation that comes from a propane heater would be nice at all. I personally like to make sure I have a great big puffy down mummy bag and a synthetic quilt to throw overtop. (A HPG serape would be perfect for this.)
