I wish I could find an affinity for the Mora designs. They might be some of the best bang for the buck available.
However, those CRKTs can't be far behind for providing great quality at a lower price. I've got a couple stashed in various places as knives I can truly depend on, but not sweat the investment if they don't get used much or if they get lost.

My EDC Folder is a Chris Reeves Large Sebenza.
My favorite little fixed blade is the Blind Horse Knives Tiger Knapp.

Next step up my Treeman Knives Recon Hunter

^ Nice. At the moment, I've got a Bradley Alias (Sebenza knockoff by Benchmade) in my pocket and a BHK Tiger Knapp on order. I ordered the latter with a scandi grind, to ride in my shoulder bag with a diamond plate.
If anyone could suggest how to cord-wrap a knife with just one hole (like the BHK), I'd be grateful.

I always have some sort of folder in my pocket, but as far as a general use do it all knife, I use this.
It is a Blind Horse Knvies Brumby lite. I had it made in CPM 154 steel and it's perfect. 3 inch blade and about 6 3/4 OAL.

Lots of practical and beautiful knives in this thread. My primary knife is an Emerson folder with a 4"+ blade (CQC-11). I'm not the world's biggest fan of chisel grind, but this one seems to work plenty well. I keep the sharpened edge at 17 degrees. In the past few months, I've really been coming around to the idea of a fixed blade with a ~ 3" blade for EDC (as opposed to backcountry) carry. Simpler, more durable, and with the right carry position just the "edge" a fellow might need in the "on the ground with an MMA blockhead" scenario. Haven't spent a lot of time researching options. I suspect that, like a pistol, a huge part of the viability of such a knife will rest on the carry system. What are fixed blade EDC folks using and liking for carry position? Mercop, that looks good on the Tiger Knapp. Nice choice of material. |

Freud would probably diagnose me as not having owned enough knives as a child---------------or at least not a Ka-Bar or a cheap Rambo survival knife with a hollow handle for matches and fish hooks with a bubble compass pommel. Anyway, I find myself constantly hitting the "add to cart" button on various knives I stumble into on the net after researching their specs and reading reviews.
Yesterday I received a Ka-Bar USN Mk1. Rather than make the effort to take artsy photographs and download them through photobucket, I'll post a link to bladeforums.
www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/853747-Ka-Bar-USN-MK1-First-Impressions
I will add my impressions of the knife though. IMO it's a SUPERB value at $48! It's got a full length ratt-tail tang, which isn't as abuse proof as a full tang, but I see this knife as an all-purpose "small knife," rather than something for processing cords of firewood or battling a zombie apocalypse. If a large knife is called for, then only a large knife wil do. This one is just 9.25" OAL, with a 5" blade measured to the hilt. The kraton handle is very comfortable, due both to the kraton qualities and the oval shape. For those who want to carry their fixed blade inside their Kit Bag, this knife is a little thick in the handle and pommel, unless you choose to break out the belt sander. But the knife seems so perfect in my hand, that I think it justifies finding an alternate means of carry. Possibly attached to the outside of a Recon bag for instance. Let the REI poofs scatter while armed with their cork screws and blunt nosed rafting knives.......................this little Ka-Bar needs begs to be packed on the trail.
As visible in the photos, the 1095 blade is full flat ground, with a sexy albiet impractical swedge along roughly half of its spine. For serious, prolonged battoning, I'd say that's a negative. But for general purpose small knife, it just adds a little style. At least for my purposes. It comes epoxy coated, which provides obvious corrosion protection, but also lacks class and adds drag, so I'll probably strip that at some point.
The kydex/plastic/mystery glass sheath (there are whole discussions just on the sheath material) seems very well designed. It's trim but solid, with lots of rivets holding it together, and several good attachment points depending on carry preference. It's got a retention lock of sorts that I would probably trust for vertical carry, but otherwise I'd use one of the two provided safety straps.
To wrap up, I feel like I've taken possession of a very nice little carbon steel fixed blade that's 100% American made, and fills the Small Knife niche very nicely.

^ Looks like nice ergos on the handle. I like the thumb scallops for side grip! |

My BHK Tiger Knapp in scandi arrived a few days ago. I have to confess that I'm still not sure why I ordered it, except that the sheath just looked so cool. And it is. Übercool.
It came with a better than serviceable edge. However, they stropped the edge excessively, IMO, to the point that it has a secondary bevel. I've spent well over an hour, now, tuning the grind on the diamond plate that I carry in my EDC kit, the item I use on all my scandi blades. I estimate that I have another hour or so to go. Fortunately, the factory grind is nice and flat. The challenge is to take off enough metal to get the damned secondary bevel out so I can strop the edge to my preference--get a better balance between "sharp" and "easily tuned up on the plate."
I also added a small loop of 5mm cord, so I can hang the knife from my pinky, bird-and-trout style.
I think it's going to be handy around camp for meal times. If I still hunted birds or if I killed many trout, it might become a favorite. |

You’re spot on Evan about the carrying system being as important as the tool. For fixed blades, I like a belt-mounted, horizontal carry in the front (which works well with the Kit Bag, mountain biking, kayaking, etc.).
For vertical carry, I like them to ride a little higher so they don’t interfere with sitting. Another options for smaller fixed blades is the MercHarness; a simple, but ingenious figure-eight para-cord loop…much preferred to neck carry.
I have carried via a modified shoulder sling. Can’t remember who designed it, but it was a pretty nice idea using 550-cord, serving as a simple harness.
